The I-10 East Freeway reopened after a man walking in the roadway was hit and killed early Thursday morning.

All inbound mainlanes were shut down at Lockwood Drive, near Wheatley High School, shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday, causing standstill traffic. The freeway fully reopened just before 7 a.m.

Houston police said a white Mack tractor-trailer was traveling westbound when it struck a man walking in the 5300 block of the East Freeway around 3:45 a.m.

The man was then struck by a gray Dodge Challenger, which was also traveling westbound, according to police.

Paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead, HPD said.

The drivers of both vehicles stayed at the scene, were questioned by investigators, determined to not be impaired, and released.

HPD said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
