A Meyerland family hoped an 18,000 pound sandbag barricade would be enough to keep the floodwater at bay. But with Houston inundated with a historic amount of rainfall, unfortunately the strategy was unsuccessful.
Kristin Massey has lived in the home for two years and now she has suffered three ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ flood events.
“It’s a 60-year-old home and it never flooded until a few years ago, and now it’s flooded twice,” she said last week.
The Memorial Day 2015 flood wrecked the home. Massey was told it was a once in a lifetime event. Then, came the Tax Day floods last year.
Determined not to suffer a third flood, Massey armed herself with about $5,000 worth of supplies, and spent days getting ready for Hurricane Harvey.
Her main goal was to keep the rain out of her home so her family can stay inside.
Unfortunately, Massey says they had about 4.5 feet of water in the house. Her family is staying with neighbors nearby.
Her son was set to start kindergarten this week.
“We don’t want to be out of home for the first half of the year. The reason we moved here is because the schools are so good,” Massey said.
While the neighborhood was rooting for her bold approach, but Massey is really still hoping for a long-term solution.
“We really have to focus on the infrastructure in Houston. We have to,” she said.
