A man was killed by his own brother after he threatened to hit their mother with a sledgehammer at a home in Katy, police say.
Authorities received a call for shots fired at the home on 11th street near Katyland Drive around 12:40 a.m. Monday.
Officials say this all started as a dispute between 34-year-old Clifton Achterberg and his mother 62-year-old Gail Achterberg.
Clifton was allegedly threatening to hit his mother with the sledgehammer. When Clifton’s 31-year-old brother Walter saw what was happening, he fired a shot at Clifton with his pistol.
The bullet went through Clifton’s chest and hit his mother in the left arm.
Clifton died. His mother was treated at the scene.
Police tell reporters both brothers live at the home. It’s not clear what the original argument was about, but officers also say they have dealt with the family on and off for years.
Walter was questioned by police and released.
The district attorney will refer the case to a grand jury.
This is the first homicide of the year in Katy.
