Croatia thrashes Czech Republic 5-1 and reignites hopes for World Cup 2026

Croatia sent a powerful message in Group L of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, dismantling group leaders Czech Republic 5-1 at the Opus Arena. Backed by a vintage performance from captain Luka Modric and a standout showing from Andrej Kramaric, the Croatians showed they’re not out of the race yet.

Despite a quiet first half, the breakthrough came just before halftime. After a disallowed early goal by Josko Gvardiol, it was Kramaric who opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, capitalizing on an assist from Gvardiol to make it 1-0.

The second half started with a brief scare for the hosts, as Tomas Soucek equalized for the Czechs in the 58th minute. But Croatia responded immediately and furiously.

Just four minutes later, a penalty was awarded and calmly converted by Luka Modric to retake the lead. Then came a Croatian onslaught: Ivan Perisic extended the lead to 3-1 in the 68th minute, followed by another penalty goal from Ante Budimir (72’), and finally Kramaric’s second of the night at 75’, capping off a brilliant display.

With this victory, Croatia narrows the gap in Group L to just three points, still holding two games in hand over the Czech Republic. The race for the top spot is wide open, and with performances like this, Zlatko Dalic’s team looks poised to challenge until the end.

Both teams return to action on September 5: the Czechs will visit Montenegro, while Croatia faces the Faroe Islands.

Match Summary:

  • Score: Croatia 5-1 Czech Republic
  • Croatia Goals: Kramaric (42’, 75’), Modric (62’ pen), Perisic (68’), Budimir (72’ pen)
  • Czech Republic Goal: Soucek (58’)
  • Venue: Opus Arena, Croatia
  • Man of the Match: Andrej Kramaric (2 goals, 1 assist)
