In a thrilling all-Brazilian clash, Palmeiras edged out Botafogo 1-0 after extra time to book their place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The match, held at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, marked the beginning of the knockout phase of the tournament. Palmeiras, who topped Group A on goal difference over Inter Miami, looked to assert their dominance over a Botafogo side that surprised many by advancing from Group B ahead of Atlético de Madrid.

The game started cautiously, with both teams respecting each other’s strengths. During regular time, chances came at both ends, with Botafogo goalkeeper John standing out with key saves against Estevão and Luighi. Palmeiras keeper Weverton was equally solid when called upon.

With the score still 0-0 after 90 minutes, the match went into extra time. The deadlock was finally broken in the 100th minute when substitute Paulinho scored the decisive goal — a low strike into the bottom left corner that sent Palmeiras fans into celebration.

Botafogo responded with intensity and nearly found an equalizer through Vitinho in the 114th minute. The pressure mounted even more after Palmeiras captain Gustavo Gómez received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 116th minute.

Despite being a man down, Palmeiras held on through the final five minutes of stoppage time added by French referee François Letexier. The final whistle confirmed their progression to the next round and kept their title hopes alive.

Match Summary:

  • Final Score: Palmeiras 1–0 Botafogo
  • Goal: Paulinho (100′)
  • Red Card: Gustavo Gómez (Palmeiras, 116′)
  • Stadium: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
  • Referee: François Letexier (France)

What’s next: Palmeiras will face the winner of Benfica or Chelsea in the quarterfinals.

Botafogo exits the tournament with pride after a well-fought battle that showcased the strength of Brazilian football on the world stage.
