Barcelona in talks over João Cancelo return

Barcelona have begun preliminary discussions regarding a potential move for Portuguese full-back João Cancelo during the January transfer window, sources close to the club have confirmed.

The Catalan side have already made initial contact with Al-Hilal, Cancelo’s current club, as well as with representatives of the player. The move comes after head coach Hansi Flick requested reinforcements in defense amid injuries and a lack of depth at the back.

While talks are ongoing, the deal remains at an early stage. Barcelona are carefully evaluating the financial feasibility of the operation, with the club’s salary cap and Financial Fair Play restrictions playing a key role in the decision-making process.

“There are conversations, but nothing has been finalized,” a club source said, stressing that Barcelona do not want to rush into a winter signing.

Cancelo, 31, previously spent the 2023–24 season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester City, making 42 appearances across all competitions. During that spell, he scored four goals and provided five assists, becoming an important figure in the squad. He later joined Al-Hilal in the summer of 2024 on a contract running until 2027.

The Portugal international is understood to be keen on returning to European football, although Barcelona face competition for his signature. Inter Milan have also expressed interest in a loan move, driven in part by the long-term injury to right-back Denzel Dumfries.

From a sporting perspective, Cancelo’s versatility makes him an attractive option for Flick. He is capable of playing on either flank and even in more advanced roles, which could allow Jules Koundé to shift back into central defense — a position the Frenchman prefers.

Barcelona’s defensive situation has been further complicated by Ronald Araújo’s absence since November due to health-related issues, forcing the coaching staff to rely on younger and less experienced options in recent weeks.

As negotiations continue, the final outcome will depend on Al-Hilal’s stance and the financial terms of any potential deal. For now, Cancelo’s future remains one of the key stories to watch as the January window progresses.
