What do I do if my neck hurts?

In your work do you have to be wearing a heavy helmet? Are you an office worker who passes stoop in front of a computer many hours each day? You may have wondered, when should I see a doctor about the pain or stiffness in my neck?

The neck – or the cervical spine – is a complex network of nerves, bones, joints and muscles. It is designed to provide strength, stability and communication between the nerves. This consists of seven bones (vertebrae C1 to C7), which are separated from each other by discs. These discs allow the column to move freely and also act as shock absorbers during periods of activity. However, the neck should also remain in its normal or neutral position.

Each time you lower your head to look at your cell phone, you apply a considerable amount of pressure to your cervical spine. Research has confirmed that a head bent 45 degrees forward – the typical position when sending text messages – can exert a force on the column of almost 50 pounds. In the case of military pilots, for example, the weight comes from helmets that are loaded with electronic screens, communication systems and night vision goggles. Either way, the result will probably be neck pain, whether temporary or chronic.

The causes of neck pain

In addition to work-related pressure, which is normal for construction workers and other jobs that require lifting or staying in awkward positions, too much effort in the gym can also cause sudden or prolonged neck pain. Weekend activities, be it a football game or a home improvement project can also be a cause. Waking up with the “crooked neck” is one of the most common complaints, which can be related to a bad position when sleeping.

The first thing to do is recognize that neck pain is probably not dangerous at all. The second thing is to try to avoid the activity or the position that the neck pain has caused you. Try to correct the position when sleeping, or what caused the pain. As long as you are not experiencing other symptoms such as tingling or numbness in the hands or fingers, and as long as the symptoms do not last for a long time, then you will probably be fine and the problem will resolve itself.

However, if the pain continues for more than three or four days, or if it is progressing, even if you have stopped doing the activity, then it is probably time to go to your doctor.
