Botafogo advances to Round of 16 despite 1-0 loss to Atlético Madrid

Botafogo achieved a dramatic and hard-fought qualification to the Round of 16 in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Despite losing 1-0 to Atlético Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the Brazilian side secured their spot in the next round thanks to a superior goal difference, leaving the Spanish club eliminated.

Atlético entered the match under pressure, needing a win by more than one goal after suffering a heavy defeat to PSG in their opening match. The game was tense and closely contested, with few clear chances and a lot of midfield battles. A controversial VAR decision in the first half denied Atlético a penalty after Julián Álvarez was brought down in the box—previous contact from Sorloth invalidated the call.

In the second half, Diego Simeone’s side intensified their attack. The introduction of Ángel Correa gave the team a spark, and the breakthrough came in the 86th minute when Antoine Griezmann scored, reigniting Atlético’s hopes.

However, time ran out before they could find the second goal they needed. Botafogo, visibly shaken after conceding, dug in defensively and held firm until the final whistle.

Both teams finished with six points in the group, but Botafogo’s superior goal difference (+1 to Atlético’s 0) ensured their progression to the knockout stage. The Brazilian champions celebrated their advancement, while Atlético were left frustrated, exiting the tournament despite a final-round victory.

Final Score: Atlético Madrid 1-0 Botafogo
Qualified: Botafogo (on goal difference)
Eliminated: Atlético Madrid
