Police arrested a man after he allegedly beat up an elderly couple and tried to steal a woman’s purse containing $75,000, according to reports. Police said the woman made a substantial withdrawal from the bank on Friday morning, and was pulling up in front of a business she and her husband own in the 2300 block of U.S. 290.
Harris County Precinct 4 Constables said that is when the woman was ambushed. Investigators said the woman was followed from her bank by a group of men before being accosted by a man police later identified as Davis Mitchell, according to a press release.
Police said Mitchell emerged from the back seat of a KIA Sportage and grabbed the woman as she got out of her car. Mitchell allegedly punched the woman and dragged her while she held onto the purse. Her husband saw the assault and ran outside to help his wife, police said.
While the two men were fighting, a black Chrysler 300 drove up and another man exited from the driver’s seat and began beating the couple and tried to steal the purse.
A deputy constable who was patrolling nearby said he saw several men fighting in the parking lot with the couple, and caught one of the men trying to steal the woman’s purse.
The second suspect, meanwhile, got into the Chrysler 300 and backed over the couple while the other man continued to fight them for the purse, police said.
Arriving deputies arrested Mitchell tried to flee on foot, and arrested him. The woman was taken to an area hospital in critical condition as a result of the attack. Mitchell was booked into the Harris County Jail with a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held without bond.
