The man who was shot in the leg before crashing into a Spring ISD school bus Tuesday morning remains in the hospital.

Deputies say the man was shot in the calf at Cypress Ridge Apartments less than two miles from the school bus crash on FM 1960 near Rolling Creek.

The victim told authorities that he drove to the apartment complex on Bammelwood to visit a woman.

Once inside the apartment, the man says he got into a fight with two other men, and while he was running to his vehicle he was shot.

“To wake up to gunshots was really frightening because it was around the corner,” said Dominique Salas, who says she heard three shot fired.

Salas says dozens of kids from the complex were walking through the same parking lot when the shots came out of the second story unit.

“The kids were walking to the school bus stop and once they heard the shots they just ran back,” she said.

One bullet hit the driver’s side door of the victim’s white BMW as he drove away from the parking lot.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez says the victim was likely headed to an emergency room for his gunshot when he crashed into the loaded school bus.

Spring ISD tells local media that 10 students and the driver were on the bus at the time of the crash, however, none of them were hurt. The students were on the way to Spring Early College Academy.

“They were obviously a little rattled from what happened on their way to school – pretty shocking to go through it,” said Gonzalez.

Witnesses told reporters that the man fired back at the apartment unit from inside his car, but deputies say they did not find a gun inside the vehicle.

Authorities say the victim is conscious and stable.
