Privacy Risks of Converting Photos to Ghibli Style with ChatGPT

In recent weeks, converting photos to the style of Studio Ghibli using ChatGPT has gained popularity among social media users. Through its integration with image generators like DALL·E, millions have shared their artistic transformations. However, few consider the risks associated with this practice.

Data Privacy Concerns

Unlike other platforms that simply collect images, using art generators like DALL·E requires users to give explicit consent for data sharing. Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union, this consent allows companies like DeepAI to store and process user information with greater freedom, leading to serious legal implications.

Key Risks

The Center for Analysis and Study of Communication (CAESCO) has highlighted that these tools can extract valuable personal information from the uploaded images. Key risks include:

  • Facial Recognition: Use of unique facial features to automatically identify individuals.
  • Emotional Analysis: Detection of facial expressions to infer emotions.
  • Digital Profiles: Creation of behavior patterns based on the images submitted.
  • Online Tracking: Association of visual identity with profiles on other platforms.
  • Deepfake Usage: Incorporation of the user’s face into artificially generated videos.

Protecting Your Identity

Cybersecurity experts recommend exercising caution when interacting with AI tools that require uploading personal images:

  1. Review Privacy Policies: Understand what data is collected and how it will be used.
  2. Avoid Sensitive Images: Do not upload photos of minors or individuals without their consent.
  3. Choose Secure Platforms: Look for services with transparent security policies.
  4. Limit Permissions: Do not grant unnecessary access to your gallery or camera.
