Sergio Ramos, a step away from becoming Rayados’ new signing

Sergio Ramos, the veteran Spanish defender, is very close to signing with Rayados de Monterrey. After several months as a free agent, it seems that the deal between the player and the Monterrey club is already sealed, with only the medical examination left to make the transfer official.

According to reports from César Luis Merlo, both sides have agreed on the financial terms of the contract, which will be for one year. It is expected that personnel from Monterrey will travel to Spain to conduct the medical checks before Ramos travels to Nuevo León to join the team.

This signing would mark Rayados’ sixth reinforcement in the current transfer market, following the arrivals of Luis Reyes, Alfonso Alvarado, Ricardo Chávez, Nelson Deossa, and Carlos Salcedo. Salcedo’s injury prompted the club’s management to seek a central defender replacement, and the experienced Ramos, who was part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning team, was the chosen one.

In order to finalize the deal, Rayados had to free up a non-Mexican player spot, sacrificing Johan Rojas, who is expected to join Necaxa.

It’s worth noting that Ramos has not played since May 2024, when he participated in the last match of La Liga that season. Since then, he has been without a club, but at 38 years old, he will turn 39 in March. Despite his time off the field, his arrival strengthens Rayados’ squad, which also includes other high-profile players like Sergio Canales, Oliver Torres, and Lucas Ocampos, ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
