The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an 82-year-old woman they believe was weather-related.
Deputies responded to a missing person’s report Wednesday just before 10:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Dreamland in east Harris County.
Family members told deputies that the woman, who suffers from dementia, was not at home after their daily check on her.
A search was conducted around her home, where they found her body in a wooded area nearby.
Deputies said it appears the woman walked away from her house and was in the woods where she “succumbed to the cold temperatures and exposure.”
The cause of death has not been determined.
The Houston Fire Department said one homeless person died of hypothermia during the city’s winter storm.
