The retinologist is a doctor who first specializes in ophthalmology and then sub-specializes in diseases and surgery of the retina. This subspecialist is a highly trained physicist to diagnose and treat diseases of this part of the eye and complex microsurgeries of the visual system.

The retina is a layer of tissue in the back of the eye that perceives light and sends images to the brain. In the center of this nervous tissue is the macula. It provides the ability for central focus and sharpness to read, drive and see the details clearly.

The diseases of the retina affect this important tissue. It can affect your eyesight and some are severe enough to cause blindness. Some examples are:

  • Macular degeneration: Disease that destroys the acuity of central vision
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Retinal detachment: Medical emergency that occurs when the retina detaches from the back of the eye
  • Retinoblastoma: Cancer of the retina. It is more common in young children
  • Epirretinic membrane: Scar tissue in the macula
  • Macular hole: Small break in the macula that usually occurs in people over 60 years
  • Floating bodies: cobwebs or small spots in the field of view

If you have doubts or require more information, contact the specialists of the Retinologists in Mérida portal.
