Mexican authorities announced on Monday that four dead bodies were found in the hotel zone of Cancun, a popular resort city.
The victims’ nationalities or identities are unknown at this time. The announcement came just days after a US tourist was shot in the leg in the nearby town of Puerto Morelos. Two suspects have been detained in connection with the killings. The cause of death is currently under investigation.
The US State Department has previously issued a travel alert for Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts, including Cancun, due to drug gang violence.
There have been several violent incidents along the Caribbean coast, including the deaths of two Canadian tourists in Playa del Carmen and two other tourists in Tulum caught in a crossfire between rival drug dealers.
