Angela Merkel says ‘it should be between a man and a woman’ after she votes against same-sex marriage

Germany has legalised same-sex marriage despite their Chancellor Angela Merkel voting against it.

Despite being beloved by many pro-EU liberals, Ms Merkel has conservative views towards marriage.

A series of pictures claiming Angela Merkel would not negotiate with Theresa May because of the DUP’s Christian conservative views on homosexuality went viral on social media after the election, despite the fact Ms Merkel herself has Christian conservative views on homosexuality.

She said she voted against the winning bill because she thinks marriage should be between a man and a woman.

The Chancellor explained she voted against legalising gay marriage given her personal view that marriage should be between a man and a woman, but she hoped parliament’s approval of the measure would lead to more social cohesion.

“For me, marriage in the Basic Law is marriage between a man and a woman and that is why I did not vote in favour of this bill today,” she told reporters moments after the 393-266 vote in favour of an amendment that will legalise same-sex marriage.

“I hope that the vote today not only promotes respect between different opinions but also brings more social cohesion and peace,” she added.

Shocked social media users reacted after finding out the liberal hero did not vote for same-sex marriage. One said: “Concerned at reports Angela Merkel might not be a comrade.”

Another wrote: “Wait. Angela Merkel voted against the legalisation of gay marriage??????”

The German legal code was changed to say “marriage is entered into for life by two people of different or the same sex”, in the bill that was strongly supported by leftist parties.

The reform grants full marital rights, including child adoption, to gay and lesbian couples, who in Germany have been allowed since 2001 to enter so-called civil unions.
